Characteristics

Tall evergreen tree 30–46 m. high; trunk cylindrical, with small buttresses; bark smooth or nearly so, grey to greyish-black.. Leaves: upper part of stipules free, thin, lanceolate, caducous, or apparently absent; petiole with rhachis 4–14.5 cm. long; leaflets 2–4 pairs, elliptic to ovate-elliptic, sometimes slightly obovate-elliptic, 5–18 cm. long, 3–9.5 cm. wide (larger on juvenile shoots), pubescent on midrib and lateral nerves beneath, with the surface beneath usually sparsely minutely and inconspicuously appressed-puberulous; primary lateral nerves ± 7–10 on each side of the midrib in mature leaflets.. Panicles terminal, rounded, much branched, dense; ultimate racemose branches short, 2.5–6 cm. long, shortly brown-tomentose or-tomentellous.. Bracts small, 2–3 mm. long, falling while the flower-buds are very young indeed.. Pedicels of open flowers 10–16 mm. long.. Bracteoles brown, 8.5–13 mm. long, 6–10 mm. wide.. Sepals (4–)5.. Petals white; upper one broadly obovate or obtriangular, ± bilobed at apex, 9–12 mm. long, 8–11.5 mm. wide; 4(–5) smaller, 4–10 mm. long, 1.5–4 mm. wide.. Stamens 10–11.. Pods large, 15–31 cm. long, 5.5–9.3 cm. wide, brown, flat, woody, tomentose, ± obliquely nerved.
