Characteristics

Tree 3–12 m. high, with rounded or spreading crown.. Leaves: stipules often with foliaceous ovate-cordate auricles up to ± 2.5–4 cm. long and 2–2.5 cm. wide; petiole with rhachis 15–27 cm. long; leaflets 3–4(–5) pairs, ovate-elliptic, elliptic, or less commonly oblong-elliptic, (7–)10–25 cm. long, (4–)4.8–12.7 cm. wide (larger—to ± 40 × 20 cm.—on coppice or juvenile shoots), ± densely pubescent or tomentose at least on midrib and lateral nerves beneath and sometimes all over; primary lateral nerves (9–) 12–14 on each side of the midrib in mature leaflets.. Panicles lax; ultimate racemose branches 5–25 cm. long, dark brown-tomentose.. Bracts 4–8 mm. long.. Pedicels of open flower 4–13 mm. long.. Bracteoles brown, 11–20 mm. long, 10–12 mm. wide.. A tree. It grows 12-18 m tall. The trunk is 80 cm across. It is often hollow. There are 3-4 pairs of leaflets. They are 10-25 cm long by 5-13 cm wide. The flowers are in loose groups. The petals are white. The fruit are pods 15-30 cm long by 5-9 cm wide. They have rusty hairs. The seeds are 2-3 cm long by 2-3 cm wide.
Inflorescences lax; ultimate branches 5–25 cm long, dark brown-tomentose; bracts 4–8 mm long; pedicels of open flowers 4–13 mm long; bracteoles brown, 11–20 × 10–12 mm.
Petals white, the upper one 12–15 × 6–10 mm, obovate or obovate-elliptic, rounded and not bilobed at apex, the other 4–5 smaller, 10–13 × 3.5–5 mm.
Pods 15–30 × 5.4–8.5 cm, densely rusty-brown-tomentose, somewhat glabrescent.
Seeds 2.5–3.2 × 1.8–3 cm.
