Characteristics

Aquatic herb; corm 2-lobed, centrally constricted, 5–15 mm long. Leaves to 15, distichous, erect, 1–4 (–8) cm long, 1–2 mm diam., firm, tapering to an acute apex, mid-green; base to 8 mm wide, narrowly winged, white; peripheral fibre strands, stomata and internal hairs absent; trans-lacunar diaphragms visible especially basally; ligule reniform, 1 mm long; labium absent. Sporangia round, 1–3 mm diam., semi-translucent, white; velum absent. Microspores spinulose or with cylindrical projections surmounted by finger-like branches, brown. Megaspores Type I, spherical, 0.3–0.5 mm diam., almost smooth or finely tuberculate, drying white to black.
