Characteristics

Small aquatic herb; corm 3-or 4-lobed, to 9 mm wide. Leaves 5–10 (–20), spirally arranged, erect, 15–50 mm long, 1-2 mm diam., firm, bright green above, white in basal half to two-thirds; base 4–8 mm wide, winged; peripheral fibre strands, internal hairs and stomata absent; trans-lacunar diaphragms scarcely visible; ligule reniform to ovate, to 5 mm long; labium minute or absent. Sporangia round to elliptic, 2–3 mm long, 1.5–2 mm wide, semi-transparent, brown; velum absent. Microspores smooth or spinose, brown. Megaspores Type I, 0.35–0.45 mm diam.; proximal faces tuberculate or with low markings; distal face with low cristae and tubercles often forming an irregular reticulation, drying greyish white.
