Characteristics

Aquatic herb; corm 2-lobed, to 2 cm long; strap-like extensions (previous year's growth) 1–6 cm long. Leaves 4–8 (–16), distichous, erect to spreading, 5–20 mm long, 1–2.5 mm diam., firm, broadest centrally, attenuate, green; base 3–4 mm wide, narrowly winged, white; peripheral fibre strands, stomata and internal hairs absent; trans-lacunar diaphragms visible only basally; ligule semicircular, 1 mm long; labium absent. Sporangia round, 1.5–2 mm diam., semi-translucent, pale brown; velum absent. Microspores minutely spinulose, dark brown. Megaspores Type I, 3-lobed, 0.3–0.5 mm diam.; proximal faces finely tuberculate, but sometimes restricted to rows near triradiate ridge; distal face finely tuberculate or smooth, drying white, grey or black.
