Characteristics

Amphibious herb; corm 3-lobed, 7–15 mm wide. Leaves 5–15, spirally arranged, erect or recurved, 25–70 mm long, 0.5–1 mm diam., flexible, acute, bright green; base to 15 mm wide, broadly winged, white; peripheral fibre strands and internal hairs absent; stomata numerous in apical part; trans-lacunar diaphragms visible; ligule elongate-triangular, 1–1.5 mm long; labium present or absent. Sporangia elliptic to round, 3–4 mm long, c. 2 mm wide, semi-transparent, spotted dark brown, rarely uniformly brown; velum absent. Microspores scabrous, dark brown. Megaspores Type I, 0.35–0.45 mm diam.; proximal and distal faces cristate to reticulate, rarely almost smooth, drying dull brown, although white when immature.
