Subtending bract suberect, very short. Spikelets ovate, 1.4-9.0 x 1.0-2.4 mm, 4-27-flowered. Glumes ovate, 0.8-2.1 x 0.4-1.6 mm, keel excurrent into minute point. Style branches 2 (var. setiformis) or 3 (var. cernua. Flowering time July-Mar. Nutlet broadly obovate, 0.5-1.2 x 0.4-1.0 mm, biconvex (var. setiformis) or 3-angled (var. cernua), brown or black, surface tuberculate (var. setiformis) or finely reticulate (var. cernua.
