Characteristics

Plants mostly 70-120 mm high. Corm 12-16 mm diam.; tunics of medium-textured, netted fibres, bearing medium-sized cormlets at base. Stem usually 1-or 2-branched, branches short, twisted, subtended by membranous, attenuate bracts and prophylls 2-3 mm long. Leaves 3, lower 2 sword-shaped to falcate, 3-9 mm wide, margins and midrib slightly thickened, uppermost leaf sheathing lower 1/2-2/3 of stem. Main spike mostly 3-to 6-flowered, markedly flexuose, branches (1-)3-to 5-flowered; bracts 5-7 mm long, membranous or papery, opaque-purple or rust-coloured and veins hardly evident, with short acute teeth, inner ± as long or slightly longer than outer. Flowers nodding, bright purple-pink, yellow in throat with base of tepals edged with red, strongly scented of sweet pea; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 6-8 mm long; tepals subequal, oblong, 10-12 x ± 4 mm, spreading at right angles to tube. Filaments 6-7 mm long, ± 5 mm; anthers ± 4 mm long. Style dividing below or opposite bases of anthers, branches ± 3 mm long, spreading below anthers.
