Plants 350-450 mm high. Corm ± globose, 17-20 mm diam.; tunics of hard, coarse, mostly vertical fibres extending upward in a collar around base. Stem usually simple or 1-branched, branch held close to main stem. Leaves 3, lower 3 basal, exceeding spike, linear, leathery, firm-textured, 2-3 mm wide, uppermost leaf partly sheathing with short free blade. Spike closely 3-to 9-flowered; bracts ± dry, pale or flushed pink, 5-8 mm long, outer with several prominent veins, either 1-toothed or shortly 3-toothed, inner 2-veined, 2-toothed. Flowers rotate, ± erect, dark red with dark blue to purple centre; perianth tube filiform, 4-7 mm long; tepals subequal, ± elliptic, spreading, connate in lower ± 1 mm, 17-20 x 7-10 mm. Filaments erect, ± 3.5 mm long, parallel, purple-blue; anthers suberect, ± 7 mm long; pollen dark purple. Style dividing opposite base of filaments, purple, branches falcate, ± 4 mm long.
