Characteristics

Well-branched dwarf shrublet up to 100-400 mm tall, branches erect or decumbent and then sometimes rooting, glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long, few scattered glistening glands as well, very leafy. Leaves opposite, pseudofasciculate, largest primary leaves 1.5-9(-11) x 0.5-2.5(-6) mm (the largest leaves on coppice shoots after fire), oblong-spathulate, spathulate or cuneate, obtuse, entire or with a pair of teeth near apex, glabrous above, glistening glands below, sometimes oozing and then invisible but leaves look varnished. Flowers borne singly in axils of each leaf tuft on ultimate twiglets, sometimes overtopped by new growth. Pedicels up to 9-30 mm long, glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long, scattered glistening glands as well. Calyx tube 0.2 mm long, lobes 2.5-4.4 x 0.8 mm, oblong to oblong-spathulate, subacute, glistening glands all over, sometimes minute glandular hairs as well on margins. Corolla tube 12-18 x 2-2.5 mm in throat, cylindric abruptly expanded near apex, limb almost regular, c. 10-15 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 3.3-5.4 x 3.2-4.5 mm, anticous lobe 3.5-5.4 x 3.5-4.5 mm, all lobes cuneate, ± truncate, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs up to 0.15-0.2 mm long, glistening glands as well mainly on backs of lobes, broad transverse band of clavate hairs in throat extending briefly onto lower lip, lobes with a broadly cuneate median patch usually brown in colour, rarely orange or maroon, lateral margins white or cream. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.2-2 mm long, anthers 0.8-1.1 mm, anticous filaments 0.6-1 mm long, anthers 0.5-0.8 mm, all filaments puberulous. Stigma 0.3-0.4 mm long. Style 9.5-14 mm long. Ovary 2-3 x 1.2-1.7 mm. Capsules 6-8 x 2.5-3.5 mm, glistening glands all over. Seeds c. 0.7-0.8 x 0.4-0.5 mm. Flowers can be found in any month.
