Characteristics

Perennial herb, stems several tufted from a woody caudex, c. 200-450 mm long, up to 5 mm diam. at base, simple to laxly branched from base, erect, decumbent or sprawling, glandular-villous, hairs up to 1.5-2.5 mm long, very delicate. Leaves opposite only at extreme base, soon alternate, imbricate except in very lax specimens, up to 5-23 x 3-18 mm (ratio c. 1-1.5:1), often small near base of twig, suddenly increasing in size, then decreasing again on flowering part, ovate to broadly elliptic or suborbicular, base ± rounded, sessile, apex obtuse becoming acute in uppermost leaves, margins entire to serrate in upper half, both surfaces glandular-villous, hairs up to 1-2 mm long. Flowers solitary in upper leaf-axils, forming long (up to c. 300 mm) crowded racemose inflorescences. Pedicels up to 3-8 mm long. Calyx tube 0.1-0.2 mm long, lobes 5.5-7.5 x 0.7-1.25 mm, oblong to oblong-elliptic, subacute, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 1-1.6 mm long. Corolla tube 6.5-9 x 1.8-2.6 mm in mouth, cylindric abruptly expanded near apex, limb bilabiate, 4.2-6.2 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 2-3 x 1.2-2.5 mm, anticous lobe 1.8-2 x 1-2.5 mm, broadly ovate to suborbicular, sparsely and minutely glandular-puberulous outside or glabrous, very minutely glandular around mouth on upper surface of limb, well bearded inside with clavate hairs up to 0.3-0.5 mm long extending onto extreme base of anticous lip, lobes ranging from creamy white to pale yellow with a median brown streak at base of each lobe. Stamens: posticous filaments 1-1.6 mm long, anthers 0.7-1.2 mm, anticous filaments 0.4-0.8 mm, anthers 0.6-1 mm, all filaments puberulous. Stigma 0.25-0.4 mm long. Style 3.7-5.7 mm. Ovary 2-2.5 x 0.8-1.1 mm. Capsules 6-8 x 3-3.5 mm, glabrous. Seeds c. 0.25 x 0.2-0.25 mm.
