Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Jamesbrittenia

Characteristics

Spreading dwarf shrublet up to c. 200-500 mm tall, branches prostrate, ascending or erect, very twiggy, often with short stiff lateral branchlets, crowded with closely leafy brachyblasts, minutely puberulous with a mixture of large glistening glands and minute big-headed hairs mostly less than 0.1 mm long, occasionally up to 0.15 mm, rarely 0.2 mm, the glands sometimes oozing so that stems and leaves look varnished. Leaves opposite and decussate, crowded, sometimes more distant and alternate upwards, primary leaves 1.5-3(-5.5) x 0.3-1(-2) mm (ratio of length to breadth 2.5-7:1), oblong to narrowly spathulate, mostly entire, occasionally a primary leaf with a pair of small teeth near the apex, thick-textured, often conduplicate, apex obtuse to subacute, upper surface glabrous or with a very few glistening glands or minute stalked hairs especially when young, lower surface thickly beset with glistening glands (sometimes oozing, then leaf looks varnished). Flowers solitary in the axils of the primary leaves, irregularly scattered all along the branchlets. Pedicels up to (8-)10-22 mm long, sparsely and very minutely puberulous, glistening glands as well, sometimes looking varnished. Calyx tube c. 0.2 mm long, lobes 1.7-2.8 x 0.6-0.8 mm, ± oblong, subacute, glistening glands all over, minute glandular hairs on margins. Corolla tube 9.5-11 x 1.8-2 mm in throat, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, limb oblique, 10-18 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 3.8-7 x 2.3-4 mm, anticous lobe 4-7.5 x 2.5-5.3 mm, all lobes cuneate-oblong, often retuse, glandular-pubescent outside, hairs up to 0.15-0.2 mm long, glistening glands as well mainly on backs of lobes, broad band of clavate hairs in throat extending very briefly onto base of lower lip, lobes shades of pink, purple, mauve and blue, occasionally white, probably always yellow in throat, once recorded as having a red spot at base of each lobe (invisible in dried material). Stamens: posticous filaments 1.2-1.5 mm long, anthers 0.8-1.2 mm, anticous filaments 0.5-1 mm, anthers 0.5-0.8 mm, all filaments minutely puberulous. Stigma c. 0.2 mm long. Style 6-8 mm. Ovary 1.7-2 x 0.8-1 mm. Capsules 4-8 x 2.5-5 mm, glistening glands all over. Seeds c. 0.7-0.8 x 0.4 mm. Flowers have been recorded in all months.
