Characteristics

Twiggy shrublet up to c. 350 mm tall, stems erect or decumbent, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.25-0.5 mm long, leafy. Leaves opposite, alternate upwards, pseudofasciculate, largest 10-22 x 2.5-6 mm, blade oblong in outline with a conspicuous petiolar part, divided nearly to midrib, the largest lobes often divided again, lobes broadly elliptic to subrotund, apex rounded, both surfaces glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.2-0.5 mm long (longest on petiolar part), glistening glands as well, mainly on lower surface. Flowers solitary in axils of upper leaves, these rapidly very small upwards, forming long racemes sometimes panicled. Pedicels up to 8-15(-23) mm long. Calyx tube c. 0.2-0.25 mm long, lobes 2.3-3.2 x 0.6-1 mm, spathulate, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.2-0.6 mm long, glistening glands as well. Corolla tube c. 4-5 x 3 mm in throat, cylindric, abruptly expanded into the limb, mouth dorsoventrally compressed, limb oblique, c. 6-8 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 2.2-3 x 2.5-3 mm, anticous lip porrect, anticous lobe 2.2-3 x 2.2-3.3 mm, all lobes suborbicular, glandular-pubescent outside, hairs up to 0.25-0.5 mm long, glistening glands as well, broad transverse band of clavate hairs in throat extending briefly onto base of anticous lip on either side of slightly raised 3-lobed palate, lobes brick-red, bright red or dark red, perhaps rarely white, palate yellow. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.2-1.6 mm long, either glabrous or minutely glandular above, minutely pubescent on decurrent part, anthers 0.5-0.8 mm long, anticous filaments 0.4-lmm long, minutely puberulous, anthers 0.4-0.7 mm long. Stigma 0.2-0.4 mm long, included. Style 1.8-2.2 mm long. Ovary 1-1.4 x 0.7-1 mm. Capsules c. 3.5-6 x 2-2.5 mm, glistening glands all over, a few minute hairs at apex. Seeds c. 0.6-0.75 x 0.3 mm.
