Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Jamesbrittenia

Characteristics

Suffrutex, sometimes shrubby, stems c. 0.3-1.5 m long, erect or straggling, becoming twiggy with many lateral, often short, flowering branchlets towards the tips, glandular-hispid, hairs up to 0.15-0.4 mm long, glistening glands as well, closely leafy. Leaves alternate, pseudofasciculate, primary leaves 4-12(-35) x 2-6(-12) mm, obovate or occasionally elliptic in outline tapering into a petiolar part often accounting for ± half total length, blade usually folded and ± falcate, thick-textured, apex often acute, margins mostly boldly and sharply toothed (1-3 pairs of teeth), larger, lower, leaves coarsely and irregularly lobed as well as sharply toothed, often almost to midrib, occasionally secondary leaves entire, both surfaces clad in glistening glands, glandular-hispid as well mainly on veins and margins of lower surface, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long but reduced to minute projections on upper leaves (the lower, lobed and toothed leaves may be glandular-hispid on both surfaces), veins impressed above, raised below. Flowers solitary in upper leaf-axils, the leaves greatly reduced in size and soon degenerating into bracts, forming mostly few-flowered racemes. Pedicels up to c. 5-17 mm long, the lower ones often with 1 or 2 tiny bracts. Calyx tube 0.1-0.2 mm long, lobes 4-8 x 0.8-1.25 mm, oblong, acute, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.15-0.25 mm long, glistening glands as well. Corolla tube 20-22 x 2.8-3 mm, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, limb nearly regular, c. 12-13 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 4-5 x 4-6.5 mm, anticous lobe 4-5 x 3.5-6.5 mm, cuneate to broadly ovate, lateral margins often revolute, apex rounded, glandular-pubescent outside, hairs up to 0.2-0.6 mm long, glistening glands as well, inside clavate hairs at extreme base of anticous lip descending into well-bearded throat, very rarely clavate hairs all round mouth, rarely minutely glandular, rarely a few glistening glands at upper margins of lobe, seen only in buds, lobes thick-textured, varying in colour from olive green to rich shades of russet-orange, deep red, brownish purple or dark brown (colour probably deepening as flower ages), always with a paler thin-textured margin, greenish-yellow to saffron yellow. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.5-2.2 mm long, anthers 1.1-1.2 mm, anticous filaments 0.6-1 mm, anthers 0.8-1 mm, all filaments bearded with clavate hairs. Stigma 0.5-1 mm long. Style 16-19 mm. Ovary 2.7-3 x 1.2-1.5 mm, minutely glandular-puberulous, glistening glands as well. Capsule 8-10 x 3-4 mm, only glistening glands remaining, these also on placentae. Seeds c. 1.2 x 0.7 mm. Flowers can be found in any month.
