Characteristics

Suffrutex with a thick woody stock, stems several from the base, up to c. 300-500 mm long, spreading, ascending or erect, well-branched to twiggy at least in upper half, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 1-2 mm long, young parts densely leafy. Leaves alternate, pseudofasciculate, primary leaves up to 7-20 x 3-12 mm (secondary leaves smaller), obovate to oblong, rather abruptly contracted into a petiolar part accounting for up to c. 1/3 total leaf-length, apex obtuse, margins lobed (sometimes nearly to midrib), the lobes often toothed, or margins serrate, lobes obtuse, teeth obtuse to subacute, both surfaces glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.6-2 mm long, a few scattered glistening glands as well, veins impressed above, raised below. Flowers solitary in upper leaf-axils, sometimes running up into short, ± bracteate racemes, sometimes the flowering part continuing as a vegetative twig. Pedicels up to 3-13 mm long. Calyx tube c. 0.1 mm long, lobes c. 4.5-6.5 x 1-1.7 mm, oblong to elliptic, subacute, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.3-0.6 mm long. Corolla tube c. 18-23 x 2.5-3 mm in throat, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, mouth laterally compressed, limb slightly bilabiate, c. 15-22 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 5.5-9 x 5.2-7 mm, anticous lobe 6.5-9 x 5.5-7 mm, cuneate to broadly ovate, apex sometimes shallowly retuse, glandular-pubescent outside, hairs up to 0.25-0.6 mm long, glistening glands as well, inside delicate clavate hairs at extreme base of anticous lip descending into well-bearded throat, upper surface of lobes minutely glandular-puberulous, scattered glistening glands as well around mouth, lobes white. Stamens: posticous filaments c. 2-3 mm long, anthers 1-1.8 mm, anticous filaments c. 1 mm long, anthers 0.8-1.2 mm. Stigma 0.5-0.7 mm long. Style 13-20 mm. Ovary c. 2 x 1.2 mm. Capsules 5-8 x 2.8-3.5 mm, glabrous or with a few tiny glandular hairs near apex, glistening glands on placentae. Seeds c. 0.7-1.4 x 0.4-0.7 mm. Flowering has been recorded in October, November and January.
