Characteristics

Shrublet up to c. 1.3 m tall and as much across, well branched, main branches up to c. 10 mm in diam., young parts glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.5-2 mm long, very delicate. Leaves opposite becoming alternate towards tips of flowering branchlets, up to 740 x 2-15 mm (ratio 2-4.8:1), cauline ones ± patent, narrowly to broadly elliptic (upper leaves subtending flowers often ovate), apex acute to rarely obtuse, base tapered, often into a short petiolar part 1-2 mm long, margins entire or very rarely with 1-3 tiny teeth, both surfaces thinly glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.5-1 mm long. Flowers solitary in upper leaf axils, usually crowded. Pedicels up to 2-10 mm long. Calyx tube 0.1-0.2 mm long, lobes 6-12 x 0.7-1(-1.5) mm, oblong to oblong-elliptic, subacute, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 1-1.8 mm long. Corolla tube (16-)20-26 x 2.2-3 mm in mouth, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, limb nearly regular, 13-20 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 5-8 x 4-6.8 mm, anticous lobe 5-8 x 3.7-5.5 mm, broadly ovate to suborbicular, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs up to 0.15-0.4 mm long, very minutely glandular around mouth on upper surface of limb, lightly bearded inside with clavate hairs up to 0.1-0.25 mm long scarcely extending onto base of anticous lip, lobes ranging from white to shades of blue, purple or mauve, dark median bar at base of each lobe (maroon, purple black recorded), throat yellow (always?). Stamens: posticous filaments 1.7-2.5 mm long, anthers 1.2-2 mm, anticous filaments 0.8-1.5 mm, anthers 1-1.4 mm, visible in mouth, filaments bearded with tiny clavate hairs. Stigma 0.5-1 mm long. Style 13-22 mm. Ovary 2-3 x 1-1.2 mm. Capsules 6-10 x 3-5 mm, glandular-puberulous at apex. Seeds 0.3-0.5 x 0.3-0.4 mm. Flowering has been recorded in all months, but most frequently in August and September.
