Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Jamesbrittenia

Characteristics

Shrublet c. 150 mm-1.2 m tall, stems many from a stout caudex up to c. 30 mm in diam., at least young parts glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.1-0.15(-0.2) mm long, glistening glands as well, branches crowded with very leafy brachyblasts, these often less leafy in well-grown, large-leaved specimens. Leaves opposite, often alternate upwards, primary leaves (3-)10-30 x (1-)2-10 mm (secondary leaves often much smaller), spathulate or sometimes oblong-spathulate, often thick-textured, large leaves thinner with lateral veins sometimes visible, obtuse to subacute, margins mostly toothed at least near apex, up to c. 5 pairs of teeth, these sometimes coarse, secondary leaves in particular often entire, lower surface thickly beset with glistening glands, these sometimes oozing, also often present on upper surface but more thinly dispersed, usually tiny (less than 0.1 mm) glandular hairs as well on margins of petiolar part and lower part of midrib on undersurface. Flowers scattered in axils of primary leaves, often in a few consecutive axils, then a sterile portion, followed by more flowers, the twigs normally terminating in a raceme, each flower subtended by few very small leaves. Pedicels up to c. 5-18 mm long, glabrous or with scattered glistening glands, occasionally tiny (less than 0.1 mm) glandular hairs as well. Calyx tube c. 0.2 mm long, lobes 3-4.5 x 0.8-1 mm, linear-lanceolate, acute to subobtuse, thickly clad in glistening glands, oozing or not. Corolla tube 18-27 x 2.2-3 mm in throat, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, limb bilabiate c. 9-16 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 4-8 x 3-4.5 mm, anticous lobe 4-8 x 3-4 mm, all lobes oblong to cuneate, apex very obtuse to truncate, lateral margins strongly revolute making lobes look very narrow, minutely glandular-puberulous outside, glistening glands on backs of lobes, broad transverse band of clavate hairs in throat extending very briefly onto base of anticous lip, lobes thick-textured, upper surface shades of yellow-, orange-, red-or chocolate-brown, the colour often rich and dark, venation invisible, margins thin-textured and pale. Stamens: posticous filaments c. 1.4-1.8 mm long, anthers 1-1.5 mm, anticous filaments c. 0.5-0.8 mm long, anthers 0.8-1 mm long, all filaments shortly bearded. Stigma 0.5-1 mm long. Style 14-23 mm. Ovary 2.5-3 x 1.2-1.6 mm. Capsules c. 8-10 x 4 mm, glistening glands all over. Seeds c. 1 x 0.5-0.75 mm. Flowering is distributed over the whole year; records from Zambia and Zimbabwe are too few to give a clear picture; in Transvaal, Swaziland and Natal, the main season appears to be from October to April.
