Characteristics

Subshrub up to c. 0.5-1 m tall, sparingly branched from base, branches ascending or decumbent, forking above into long rod-like flowering branches, glandular-pubescent, hairs c. 0.1-0.2 mm long, very leafy on upper parts. Leaves alternate, pseudofasciculate, primary leaves up to 10-20(-30) x 2-4(-10) mm (secondary leaves smaller), often folded along midrib and ± falcate, thick-textured, narrowly oblanceolate to elliptic tapering into a short petiolar part, apex acute, margins with 2-5(-8) pairs of teeth, both surfaces with a few scattered glistening glands, minute glandular hairs often present on petiolar part and scattered along lower part of midrib below, lateral veins invisible. Flowers solitary in upper leaf-axils, the leaves greatly reduced in size and quickly degenerating into small bracts, forming long (up to c. 300 mm in fruit) terminal racemes. Pedicels up to 10-28 mm long. Calyx tube 0.1-0.2 mm long, lobes c. 4.5-5 x 1 mm, oblong, acute, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.1-0.25 mm long, glistening glands as well. Corolla tube c. 19-22 x 2.5-3 mm in throat, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, mouth somewhat compressed laterally, limb slightly bilabiate, c. 22-25 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes c. 10-11 x 5-9 mm, anticous lobe c. 10-10.5 x 5.7-10 mm, cuneate, apex ± truncate or slightly retuse, glandular-pubescent outside, hairs up to 0.1-0.3 mm long, glistening glands as well, inside clavate hairs at extreme base of anticous lip descending into well-bearded throat, upper surface of limb glandular-puberulous, scattered glistening glands as well mainly around mouth, lobes lilac to deep violet-mauve, throat yellowish-green. Stamens: posticous filaments c. 2 mm long, anthers 1-1.6 mm, anticous filaments c. 0.7-1 mm long, anthers 0.7-1.1 mm, all filaments bearded with clavate hairs. Stigma 0.6-1 mm long. Style 14-17 mm. Ovary 2.5-4 x 1.3-2 mm. Capsules c. 8-11 x 4 mm, glabrous except for a few minute glandular hairs near apex, glistening glands on placentae. Seeds c. 1.5 x 0.8 mm. Flowering at least between June and October, but probably both earlier and later.
