Characteristics

Perennial herb, taproot lignified, up to 10 mm diam. at crown, stem c. 200-400 mm tall, main stem branching from base and above, erect, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 1-2.5 mm long, very delicate. Leaves opposite, alternate above but often only near tips of inflorescences, ± patent, 15-65 x 6-32 mm (ratio 1.3-2.6:1), broadly elliptic to broadly ovate, lower ones tapering to a petiolar part 1-7 mm long, upper leaves subtending flowers often broad-based, clasping, apex acute to obtuse, margins mostly entire, occasionally with 1-2 pairs of teeth in upper part, both surfaces glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 1-2 mm long. Flowers solitary in upper leaf axils forming long (c. 150-300 mm) often crowded racemose inflorescences. Pedicels up to 6-30 mm long. Calyx tube 0.1-0.2 mm long, lobes 5.6-12 x 0.8-1.4 mm, narrowly oblong-spathulate, subacute, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 1-2.5 mm long. Corolla tube 15-22 x 2.5-2.8 mm in mouth, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, limb nearly regular, 15-20 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 4.5-7.5 x 4-6.5 mm, anticous lobe 5-7.5 x 3.5-7 mm, oblong-elliptic, glandular-puberulous or almost glabrous outside, very minutely glandular around mouth on upper surface of limb, well bearded inside with clavate hairs, hairs c. 0.25-0.5 mm long where they extend onto extreme base of anticous lip, lobes shades of lilac, rose and violet, 3 purple streaks at base of each lobe, throat yellow. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.8-2.2 mm long, anthers 1.5-1.8 mm, anticous filaments 0.8-1 mm long, anthers 1.2-1.4 mm, all filaments puberulous. Stigma 0.5-lmm long. Style 10-17.5 mm. Ovary 1.1-3 x 1.2-1.5 mm. Capsules 4-9 x 2.54 mm, glandular-puberulous at apex. Seeds 0.25-0.6 x 0.2-0.3 mm.
