Characteristics

Stout dwarf twiggy shrublet up to 150-600 mm tall, many short lateral divaricate branchlets crowded with closely leafy brachyblasts, becoming bare and subspinescent with age, young parts and pedicels glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.25 mm long. Leaves: primary leaves spirally arranged, up to 5 x 2.5 mm, those on the brachyblasts opposite and decussate, very close-set, largest ones 1.5-3.5 x 1-2.5 mm, subrotund, broadly obovate or broadly spathulate, thick-textured, very obtuse, base somewhat narrowed, entire, both surfaces with big glistening glands in centre of leaf, margins bare. Flowers solitary in the axils of the primary leaves on all the branchlets. Pedicels c. 3-8 mm long. Calyx tube 0.2-0.3 mm long, lobes 2.5-4 x 0.8-1.3 mm, oblong-lanceolate, ± obtuse, clad in glistening glands only or sometimes a few very short-stalked, big-headed glandular hairs as well near base. Corolla tube 9.5-14 x 2-2.5 mm in throat, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, limb nearly regular, c. 7-14 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 2.3-5 x 2.5-5.5 mm, anticous lobe 2.3-5 x 2.3-5 mm, all lobes broadly ovate to broadly oblong, tips rounded or retuse, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs less than 0.1 mm long, glistening glands as well mainly on backs of lobes, broad transverse band of clavate hairs in throat, lobes bicoloured, with a broad cuneate brown or purple-brown thick-textured patch bordered in lower part with thin-textured white to creamy yellow. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.5-2 mm long, anthers 0.8-1.3 mm, anticous filaments 0.6-1 mm long, anthers 0.7-1 mm, all filaments bearded with clavate or glandular hairs. Stigma 0.3-0.5 mm long. Style 7.5-11 mm. Ovary 1.1-2.2 x 1.2-1.6 mm. Capsules 5.5-9 x 4-5 mm, glistening glands all over. Seeds c. 1 x 0.7 mm.
