Characteristics

Shrublet up to c. 500 mm tall, stems up to 5-8 mm diam. at base, erect or decumbent, virgately branched, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.2-0.25 mm long, often coarse, scattered glistening glands as well on young parts, densely leafy except at the flowering tips. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, pseudofasciculate, largest primary leaves 7-25 x 3-10 mm, elliptic to lanceolate in outline gradually tapering into a petiolar part up to 1/4-1/3 total leaf-length, apex acute, margins coarsely serrate or occasionally more deeply cut but seldom more than 2/3 of way to midrib and then only in lowermost pair of lobes, lobes usually ± acute, both surfaces glandular-puberulous, hairs often rather coarse, up to 0.15-0.25 mm long, below thickly beset with glistening glands, these few above. Flowers solitary in the axils of the uppermost leaves, these rapidly smaller and passing into bracts, thus forming long racemes, sometimes panicled. Pedicels up to 12-20 mm long. Calyx tube 0.15-0.3 mm long, lobes 2.5-3.7 x 0.5-0.75 mm, oblong, acute, glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.2-0.3 mm long, scattered glistening glands as well. Corolla tube 7.5-9 x 1.6-2 mm in throat, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, limb oblique, 10-16 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 3.3-7 x 1.8-3 mm, anticous lobe 4-8 x 2.5-3.8 mm, all lobes ± cuneate-oblong, truncate to retuse, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs up to 0.15-0.25 mm long, glistening glands as well mainly on backs of lobes and swollen part of tube, transverse band of clavate hairs in throat extending briefly onto base of lower lip, lobes white, white tinged mauve at tips, or wholly mauve, throat orange. Stamens: posticous filaments 1-1.5 mm long, anthers 0.7-1 mm, anticous filaments 0.4-1 mm long, anthers 0.4-0.8 mm, all filaments minutely puberulous. Stigma c. 0.2 mm long. Style 5.4-6.5 mm long. Ovary 1.7-2 x 0.8-1 mm. Capsules c. 5 x 3 mm, minutely glandular-puberulous, glistening glands as well, sometimes confined to sutures. Flowers can be found in any month.
