Characteristics

Annual herb, stems 50-600 mm tall, up to c. 4 mm diam. at base, erect, simple but soon sparingly branched from the base and above, glandular pubescent, hairs up to 0.4-1 mm long, some of them stout (up to 0.1-0.2 mm across at base when flattened), leafy.Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, up to 20-55 x 5-30 mm, elliptic tapering to a petiolar part rapidly shorter upwards, ± acute, margins serrate, teeth up to 1-2(-3.5) mm deep, the larger ones mostly entire or 1-toothed, or occasionally several-toothed, both surfaces glandular pubescent, hairs up to 0.2-0.6 mm long, small scattered glistening glands as well. Flowers solitary in upper leaf axils eventually forming long pseudoracemes. Pedicels up to 17-55 mm long, glandular pubescent, hairs 0.2-0.4 mm long. Calyx tube c. 0.2 mm long, lobes 3.5-6 x 0.8-1.3 mm, lanceolate-oblong, glandular pubescent, hairs up to 0.2-0.6 mm long. Corolla tube 15.5-18 x 2-3 mm in throat, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, limb nearly regular, 12-24 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 5-10 x 3-6.3 mm, anticous lobe 5-9 x 3.5-7 mm, all lobes cuneate, conspicuously notched, the sinuses c. 1-3 mm deep, glandular puberulous outside, hairs up to 0.1-0.15 mm long, transverse band of clavate hairs in throat extending briefly onto base of anticous lip, lobes often white, sometimes suffused with mauve or wholly shades of mauve, dark veins conspicuous, base of each lobe with a prominent 3-pronged mark running back down the tube, seemingly changing colour as the flower matures, from yellowish brown to deep violet, often drying orange, throat yellow/orange. Stamens: posticous filaments c. 1-1.2 mm long, anthers 1.2-1.8 mm, anticous filaments c. 0.8-1 mm long, anthers 0.8-1.2 mm, all filaments minutely puberulous. Stigma c. 0.5-1 mm long. Style 10-11 mm. Ovary 2.5-3.5 x 1-1.8 mm. Capsules 6-10 x 4-5 mm, glandular-puberulous, glistening glands as well, confined to sutures. Seeds c. 0.8-1 x 0.3-0.5 mm, minutely reticulate but also patterned with transversely elongated pits arranged in chequer-board fashion. It flowers in spring.
