Characteristics

Dense rounded shrublet c. 300 mm-1.5 m tall and as much or more across, intricately branched, branches divaricate, ultimate branchlets rather short and eventually leafless and subspinescent, densely clad in short-stalked glistening glands together with delicate glandular hairs up to 0.3-1 mm long, these few to many, sometimes wanting on older parts. Leaves alternate, blade c. 3-10 x 2.5-10 mm, broadly ovate to rhomboid in outline, base cuneate to ± truncate passing abruptly into a petiolar part 1.5-5 mm long (roughly half as long as blade), apex very acute to subacute, margins usually with 2-4 pairs of coarse acute teeth, teeth entire or occasionally 1-toothed, occasionally teeth obscure, both surfaces thickly clad in short-stalked glistening glands, delicate glandular hairs as well up to 0.2-0.8 mm long. Flowers solitary in upper leaf axils, whole plant very floriferous. Pedicels up to 3-8 mm long, glandular. Calyx tube 1-1.2 mm long, lobes 2.4-3 x 1.4-1.8 mm, triangular, thickly clad in stalked glistening glands and delicate glandular hairs up to 0.3-0.8 mm long. Corolla tube c. 4-6 x 4 mm in mouth, cylindric below, upper half abruptly expanded, there obliquely campanulate, pouched on posticous side, limb nearly regular, 10-16 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 3.2-5 x 4.3-7.8 mm, anticous lobe 3.3-5 x 4-8 mm, all lobes subrotund, glandular-puberulous outside, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long, glistening glands as well, upper surface of limb minutely glandular puberulous, broad band of tiny clavate hairs all round mouth, a patch of longer ones inside tube on posticous side, lobes pale blue, mauve or lilac on opening, fading to white, throat yellow, posticous pouch dark violet. Stamens: posticous filaments 0.8-1 mm long, inserted level with top of ovary and not decurrent, anthers 1.1-1.25 mm, anticous filaments 0.4-0.6 mm long, anthers 0.8-1.2 mm long, visible in mouth, all filaments glabrous. Stigma 0.2-0.3 mm long. Style 2-3 mm. Ovary 1.3-1.7 x 1-1.3 mm. Capsules c. 4-5 x 3 mm, covered in glistening glands and minute glandular hairs. Seeds c. 0.5-0.7 x 0.25-0.4 mm.
