Characteristics

Dwarf shrublet, stock stout, woody, up to at least 30 mm in diam., stems up to 450 mm long, virgately branched, erect or decumbent and then forming a rounded bush, clad in glistening glands, making the plant look greyish, leafy. Leaves opposite becoming alternate on the inflorescence axes, pseudofasciculate, largest 14-37 x 6-20 mm, lanceolate to ovate in outline narrowed to a broad petiolar part, blade cut to midrib, lobes linear-oblong or oblong, entire to 1-2-toothed or occasionally the largest cut to midrib, acute to subacute, both surfaces clad in glistening glands. Flowers many, solitary in the axils of the leaves forming long crowded racemes or panicles, largest reduced leaves subtending flowers c. 4-8 x 0.8-1 mm, spathulate, either entire or 2-8-toothed. Pedicels up to 1-5 mm long. Calyx tube 0.1-0.2 mm long, lobes c. 1.8-2.5 x 0.3-0.4 mm, linear to subspathulate, acute or subobtuse, entire or rarely one lobe with 1 or 2 teeth, clad in glistening glands and minute hairs. Corolla tube c. 5.5-8 x 1-1.8 mm in throat, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, limb oblique, 3-5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-2 x 1-1.8 mm, anticous lobe 1.1-2 x 1-2 mm, all lobes oblong, retuse, glandular pubescent outside mainly on tube, hairs up to 0.1-0.15 mm long, glistening glands as well mainly on backs of lobes, rarely a few on upper surface as well, broad transverse band of clavate hairs in throat extending briefly onto base of lower lip, lobes maroon to crimson, magenta pink or deep purple. Stamens: posticous filaments 0.5-1.3 mm long, anthers 0.5-0.8 mm, anticous filaments 0.3-0.8 mm long, anthers 0.2-0.5 mm. Stigma 0.1-0.2 mm long. Style 3.8-5.5 mm. Ovary 1.4-1.6 x 0.6-0.8 mm. Capsules 3-4 x 1.5-2.2 mm, glistening glands all over. Seeds c. 0.5 x 0.25 mm.
