Characteristics

Annual herb, stems 20-600 mm tall, up to 5 mm diam. at base, erect, simple but soon sparingly branched from the base and above, glandular pubescent, hairs up to 0.2-0.7 mm long, up to c. 0.1 mm across flattened base, leafy. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, up to 13-60 x 5-28 mm, blade elliptic to ovate tapering to a petiolar part accounting for up to half total length, rapidly shorter upwards, ± acute, margins serrate, teeth up to 3 mm long, themselves sometimes sparingly toothed, both surfaces glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.2-0.5 mm long, small scattered glistening glands as well. Flowers solitary in upper leaf axils, eventually forming long pseudoracemes. Pedicels up to 12-30(-54) mm long, glandular pubescent, hairs 0.2-0.5 mm long. Calyx tube 0.2-0.5 mm long, lobes 3.4-5.4 x 0.6-1 mm, lanceolate-oblong, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.1-0.3 mm long. Corolla tube 7.5-17 x 1.5-2.3 mm in throat, cylindric, abruptly expanded near apex, mouth laterally compressed, limb nearly regular, 10-18 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 4-8 x 2-5 mm, anticous lobe 3.8-8 x 1.8-5 mm, all lobes cuneate-oblong, shallowly notched (but sinus occasionally up to 2 mm deep), glandular-puberulous outside, hairs up to c. 0.1 mm long, transverse band of clavate hairs in throat extending briefly onto base of anticous lip, lobes pale to deep mauve, throat yellow/orange, the colour extending onto the base of each lobe in a shortly 3-fid patch outlined with purple. Stamens deeply included, posticous filaments 1-2 mm long, anthers 1-1.5 mm, anticous filaments 0.5-1 mm long, anthers 0.7-1.1 mm, all filaments minutely puberulous. Stigma 0.2-0.5 mm long. Style 4-10.4 mm. Ovary 2-3 x 1-1.8 mm. Capsules 5-10 x 3-5 mm, very sparingly and minutely glandular-puberulous. Seeds 0.5-0.8 x 0.2-0.4 mm. They appear after spring rain, flowering between June and October.

Like J. racemosa but flower lobes more shallowly notched (at most up to 2 mm deep) and with inconspicuous veins, mouth yellow-orange extending into a 3-fid patch outlined with purple at base of each lobe.
