Characteristics

A shrub or small tree or sometimes a climber or scrambler; older branches, glabrous, younger ones glabrous, minutely puberulous, or shortly pubescent.. Leaves opposite, with simple blades, ovate or elliptic-to oblong-ovate, rounded to acute or even shortly acuminate at the apex, rounded to very slightly cuneate at the base, variable in size and those associated with the inflorescences often small, the best formed ones 2–8 cm. long, 1.5–3.7 cm. broad, midrib slightly impressed on upper with the main veins prominent on lower surface, glabrous or nearly so; petiole 3–6 mm. long, nearly glabrous to shortly pubescent, articulated near the base.. Inflorescences terminal to the main and to short lateral branches, generally compact or subcompact, with 1–11 flowers, pedicels 2–8 mm. long.. Calyx glabrous, or sparsely pubescent, teeth filiform-setaceous at anthesis 5–9 mm. long (lengthening after flowering in one variant to 15 mm.).. Corolla white to pale pink, very sweetly scented; tube 1.5–2.5 cm. long.
