Characteristics

Lianas; stems twining. Leaves opposite, mostly subcoriaceous; stipules small, interpetiolar. Inflorescences cymose-paniculate; peduncles bracteolate; pedicels well developed. Flowers with 5 sepals, the 4 lateral sepals each bearing a large gland at the base; petals clawed, the limb elliptic to obovate, the margins glan-dular, the posterior petal smaller; stamens 10, fertile, slightly unequal, the fila-ments flattened, glabrous, united at the base, the anthers subequal, longitudinally dehiscent, glabrous, the connective narrow; ovary globular, 3-carpellate, 3-loc-ular, conspicuously sulcate, the styles 3, thick, truncate at the apex, the dorsal angle obtusely apiculate. Fruit a schizocarp of 3 samaras on a pyramidal torus, each samara with a rather short dorsal wing and at each side with 2 much longer lateral wings, the seminiferous area inflated, tuberculate between the lateral wings, trilocular, the median cavity monospermous, the lateral loculi empty; seed subovoid or pyriform, the cotyledons straight.
