Evergreen, flat-topped tree 2–20 m. high, with smooth whitish or rough dark grey bark; young branchlets pubescent to tomentellous, glabrescent.. Deciduous woodland, usually occurring with Brachystegia floribunda; poor plateau soils; Kalahari sands; covers extensive areas; dominant in open grassy woods on sand; savannah exposed to fires; at elevations from 1,000-1,700 metres.
