Characteristics

Shrub to 2.5 m tall; young branches distinctly longitudinally ridged, sparsely antrorsely sericeous. Leaves glandular punctuate, glabrous or sparsely ciliate along midrib; petiole to 2 cm long; lamina narrowly ovate, largest 8.5-10.5 x 2.5-3 cm; apex obtuse; base attenuate, decurrent. Flowers in axillary racemoid cymes from upper leaf axils; peduncle 4-8.5 cm long, sparsely and finely sericeous and with subsessile glands; bracts and bracteoles falling early, triangular, subacute, to 3 mm long. Calyx 3-4 mm long, fused about halfway up, puberulous with short stubby glossy hairs; lobes triangular, acute or subacute. Corolla white or greenish white with maroon markings on lower lip, 16-18 mm long, puberulous; tube c. 7 mm long and c. 2.5 mm diameter; upper lip 9-11 mm long, strongly hooded; lower lip deflexed with recoiled lobes, 9-11 mm long, deeply 3-lobed, lobes ovate-elliptic. Filaments held in upper lip; thecae c. 2.5 mm long, oblong-ellipsoid, parallel, glabrous, lower with small mucro-like appendage c. 0.25 mm long. Capsule 18-22 mm long, densely and finely puberulous, with sculpturing of partly reticulate ridges. Seeds not compressed, reniform, reticulately sculptured, c. 5 mm long.

Much branched shrub 1-3 m high. Young branches quadrate, appressed-hairy. Leaves narrowly elliptic to lanceolate, up to 150 mm long, base shortly decurrent as a revolute wing. Inflorescence elongate; rachis up to 130 mm long; peduncle quadrate, strigose, 30-50(-130) mm long. Bracts caducous, broadly ovate, 5 x 2 mm. Bracteoles 0 or 2. Flowers sessile, in pairs, tomentose. Corolla: tube channelled abaxially; upper lip broadly ovate, deeply naviculate, as broad as long; lower lip transversely oblong. Pollen 41-50 µm long. Ovary densely velutinous. Flowering in Autumn.
