Characteristics

Shrub or small tree 3-6 m high; young branches flattened, velutinous-strigose and often glandular. Leaves more or less elliptic, up to 215 mm long, base shortly decurrent as a revolute wing. Inflorescence congested; rachis up to 60 mm long; peduncle terete, stigose, 50-80 mm long. Bracts persistent, oblanceolate to elliptic, 10-20 mm long. Bracteoles 2-6. Flowers in paired clusters of three flowers each, sometimes with secondary inflorescences, tomentose. Corolla: tube flattened adaxially with a fleshy tomentose-lanate crest; upper lip narrowly oblong and shallow, more than twice as long as broad; lower lip subrotund. Pollen 56-62 µm long. Ovary densely strigose-velutinous. Flowers mainly in midsummer but with an extended period of occasional blooms.
