Characteristics

Compact twiggy shrub 0.2-1.6 m high. Stems thick, woody and sometimes becoming spinescent, glabrous or pubescent. Bark grey, cracked and furrowed. Young shoots woody or herbaceous. Leaves glabrous, pubescent with anvil-shaped hairs, or densely and minutely puberulous, broadly ovate to obovate, 4-16 x 1.5-10.0 mm, apex obtuse to broadly cuneate, base obtuse to broadly cuneate, thick-textured; petiole short or absent. Inflorescence of cymes each reduced to a single pedunculate axillary flower. Peduncles stiff, 2.5-10.0 mm long. Bract absent. Bracteoles 2, puberulous, broadly ovate, 1-4 mm long, often joined at base across peduncle. Calyx densely pubescent, puberulous or glabrous, inside may have long hairs and glands. Corolla 10-17(-21) mm long, hooded, white to cream with mauve markings. Pollen 2-colporate, 45-61 µm long, sexine areolate. Capsule 1-seeded, clavate, hard in texture, up to 19 mm long, shiny, glabrous.
