Characteristics

Much-branched shrub, often compact and rounded, 0.3-0.6 x up to 0.65 m. Branches thick, appearing knobbly or jointed from remains of leaf bases at nodes, velvety or shortly tomentose, sometimes shaggy. Leaves sessile or petiolate, crowded, shortly and densely hairy, sometimes with longer hairs intermixed, suborbicular, ovate, obovate or elliptic, 8-15 mm long, more or less thick in texture; petiole up to 10 mm long. Bracts densely pubescent, up to 20 mm long. Bracteoles densely pubescent, ±7 mm long. Calyx shortly and densely hairy, sometimes with additional long hairs, lobes 4-8 mm long, lengthening in fruit. Corolla 1-23 mm long, magenta, deep mauve or white/blue. Capsule ±12 mm long. Seeds round and plump, 3.0 x 3.5 mm, dusty brown, glaucous.
