Characteristics

Annual herb with unbranched or branched erect, ascending or decumbent (then often rooting) stems to 50 cm long; stems bifariously puberulous and usually with few to many long glossy curly many-celled hairs to 3 mm long. Leaves with sparse to dense long curly hairs on midrib and lower part of margin (rarely absent), sometimes also on lamina; petiole 2-18 mm long; lamina ovate to elliptic (most or all widest below middle), largest 2.5-9 x 1-3.5 cm; apex subacute to broadly rounded; base cuneate to attenuate. Spikes 3-8-flowered; peduncle 0.8-4(5) cm long, bifariously puberulous and with (rarely without) few to many long glossy curly many-celled hairs; rachis 0.5-2.5 cm long, bifariously puberulous; bracts and bracteoles subulate, 1-2.5 mm long, glabrous. Calyx glabrous; lobes linear-lanceolate, two lower 2-3.5 mm long, three upper 3-4.5 mm long. Corolla white with faint pink to mauve 'herring-bones' on lower lip and two pink lines on upper lip, 4-5 mm long; tube 2-2.5 mm long; upper lip 2-3 mm long; lower lip 3-4 mm long, middle lobe 1.5-3 x 1-2 mm Filaments 2-2.5 mm long; anthers 1-1.5 mm long, thecae 0.5-0.75 mm long. Capsule 8-10.5(12) mm long, hairy in apical half, sometimes with purple lines. Seeds c. 2 mm in diameter.

Leaves sparsely pilose, hairs denser on margin and veins, broadly lanceolate to ovate, 21-65 x 9-34 mm, apex acute or obtuse, base cuneate; petiole 4-18 mm long. Inflorescence as for J. anagalloides but usually 2 per node, one of each pair with a pair of reduced leaves near base, peduncles 10-37 mm long, with(3)4 or 5(-8)flowers near top. Corolla ±4 mm long, white with maroon lines on palate. Pollen 2-porate, 22-29 µm long, sexine areolate. Capsule 4-seeded, lanceolate, delicate, usually with short hairs scattered over most of surface, these sometimes confined to apex, (6-)7-8(-9) mm long.
