Characteristics

Much-branched shrubby herb or shrub to 1 m tall; young stems pale green with straw-coloured ribs, glabrous, older branches with first dark brownish then pale grey bark. Leaves occasionally with scattered hairs on margins near base, otherwise glabrous, with few to many yellow to orange subsessile capitate glands, often only or mostly along midrib; petiole 0-3 mm long; lamina narrowly ovate to ovate or narrowly elliptic to elliptic, largest 1.6-7.5 x 0.8-3 cm; apex acute to rounded, often apiculate; base cuneate to attenuate, rarely cuneate. Flowers single or 2-4 per axil of upper leaves; bracts 0.5-2 cm long; bracteoles 0.5-2 mm long; peduncles and pedicels 0-1 (2) mm long. Calyx puberulous-ciliate, otherwise glabrous to puberulous, divided to 1-1.5 mm from base; lobes 3-9 mm long. Corolla lemon yellow to bright yellow, upper lip sometimes with red to purple veins and a purple patch at base, lower lip with well-developed 'herring-bones', 6-14(16) mm long; tube 2-6(7) mm long, widening immediately above base, 2-5 mm diameter apically; upper lip 4-9(10) mm long (upper lip 2-3 mm longer than tube); lower lip 4-13(15) x 5-12 mm Filaments 3.5-6 mm long; thecae yellow, with glandular exudate, 1-1.5 mm long, lower with bifid appendage 0.5-1 mm long. Capsule 10-15 mm long, glabrous. Seeds 2.5-3 mm diameter.
