Flowers solitary in numerous upper leaf axils along the stems and branches; pedicels short, terminal on the peduncles, 2-bracteolate at the base; peduncles persisting as straight horizontal stiff spines after the flowers have fallen.
Corolla large; tube subcylindric, straight; limb 2-lipped, the upper lip 2-lobed, the lower lip 3-lobed nearly to the base, reflexed; corolla limb ovoid in bud with the upper lip partially covering the lower lip.
Stamens didynamous, inserted near the throat of the corolla tube, long exserted; filaments slender, subparallel or somewhat divergent, slightly curved in the opened flowers, anthers deeply lobed at the base.
Ovary l-locular, with 4 placentas, each l-ovulate; style long, ± equalling and curved like the stamens; stigma short, 2-fid.
Calyx regular, 5-lobed or-fid, somewhat accrescent in fruit.
Fruit a drupe with 3(4?) pyrenes.
Leaves simple, undivided, entire.
Spinescent spreading subshrubs.
