Characteristics

Leaves petiolate, spreading; lamina 4·8-19 x 3·1-112·5 cm., elliptic or, in the upper leaves, ovate, obtuse to nearly acute at the apex, rounded or cuneate at the base, irregularly crenate-dentate at the margin, fleshy, flat or with the sides ± inflexed, green above (with purplish midrib and main nerves), glaucous beneath; petiole 3·8-7·5 cm. long, 8-12·6 mm. broad and of approximately equal thickness, semiterete (convex beneath, flattened or canaliculate above), dilated at the base, semiamplexicaul; leaves of the uppermost pair 1·3-5 cm. long bract-like, oblong or spathulate, entire, sessile.

Filaments of the lower stamens c. 1·6 mm. long, those of the upper ones c. 2 mm. long; anthers apiculate, yellow, those of the lower stamens 1·6-2 mm. long and c. 8 mm. below the sinuses between the corolla-lobes, those of the upper ones c. 1-1·25 mm. long, slightly exserted.
Corolla-tube 43-50 mm. long and 7-12·6 mm. in diameter at the subquadrangular base, thence attenuate, pale green; corolla-lobes 18·25 x 9·5-15 mm., lanceolate to elliptic, acute but not apiculate, pure white, spreading.
Flowers large, upright, in 3-8-flowered cymes, forming corymbose inflorescences 22-30 x 15-22 cm., with suberect branches; pedicels 16-19 mm. long and 1·5-2 mm. in diameter, glaucous.
Calyx-tube 1-1·75 mm. long; sepals 6-12 mm. long and 1-4 mm. broad at the base, oblong, attenuate, obtuse to acute, separated by rounded sinuses, fleshy.
Carpels 16-22 mm. long; styles 22-24 mm. long, filiform; stigmas included, c. 3 mm. below the base of corolla-lobes.
Stem 1·8-2·5 cm. in diameter at the base, erect, stout, terete, smooth, glaucous.
A completely glabrous, 60-75 cm. high, perennial succulent.
