Characteristics

Sparse shrublets with few erect or decumbent branches up to 1 m high and often with 2 or 4 ridges; roots fibrous. Leaves petiolate, glabrous; petiole (8-)15-30(-45) mm long, not clasping in lower leaves but distinctly so in upper leaves; lamina broadly elliptic to ovate, 50-80(-120) x 40-60(-80) mm, cordate in lower leaves, cuneate in upper leaves, obtuse, lobes if present, with 1-3(-4) obtuse teeth, folded lengthwise and more or less recurved, green to deep ruby-red. Inflorescence a flat-topped thyrse with several dichasia. Calyx with lobes triangular-lanceolate, (1.5-)2-3(-5) mm long. Corolla: tube quadrangular-cylindrical to almost pyramidal, 7-10 mm long, yellowish green; lobes broadly ovate to almost orbicular, 2.5-4 x c. 3 mm, yellow. Anthers 0.7-1 mm long. More
Leaves opposite-decussate, petiolate or with a ± distinct petiole-base, spreading or deflexed, rather scattered at the middle of the stem, approximate towards the base (the shortest basal internodes ± 7 mm. long) as well those of the shoots, fleshy, coriaceous and rigid on drying; lamina 5-13 x 3-5 cm., oblong-obovate, broadly elliptic, obovate or oblong, rounded at the top, coarsely crenate or undulate-crenate at the margin except at the cuneate base, green to reddish; petiole up to 4(4·5) cm., not connate with the opposite one.
Corolla 10-12(13) mm. long; corolla-tube 8-10 mm. long, broader below the middle, attenuate upwards, 4-angled (maxim, breadth of each face 3 mm.) neither contracted nor twisted above the follicles, pale pink hyaline at the lateral faces, salmon or reddish-brown along the raised nerves of the angles on drying; corolla-lobes 1·75-2·5(3) x 1·5-1·75 mm., ovate to subcircular, somewhat attenuate to or rounded at the apex, shortly apiculate, erect but not connivent, salmon or brownish-red with pale margin on drying.
Filaments of the upper stamens ± 1·5 mm. long, inserted 1-1·5 mm. below the base of corolla-lobes; anthers 0·4-0·5 mm., suborbicular, apiculate by a minute globose tubercule between the thecae, those of the upper stamens slightly exserted, just a little above of the base of corolla-lobes, those of the lower stamens included.
Inflorescence up to 30 x 28 cm., panicle-like, not very dense, formed by subhemispherical partial corymbs; panicle-branches in 4-7 main pairs, the lower ones up to 13 cm. long, erect-patent or nearly divaricate, somewhat arched, at the axils of small bract-like leaves; pedicels 2-7 mm. long.
Sparse shrublet with few erect or decumbent branches, up to 1 m high. Stems terete or irregularly ridged. Leaves lobed, with obtuse teeth, folded lengthwise, recurved, green to deep ruby-red. Corolla tube 7-10 mm long. Flowers yellowish green and yellow.
Stems 1 to few from a woody base, the floriferous ones 0·6-2 m. high, ± robust, indistinctly 4-angled or terete upwards, somewhat 4-angled towards the base, simple, erect, woody below, reddish, those of the sterile shoots distinctly 4-angled.
Follicles 6-5-8-5 mm. long, attenuate into the styles; styles (1·75)2-2·5(3) mm. long, minutely papillose, with the stigmas at the level of the lower anthers.
Calyx 2-3·25 mm. long, green, somewhat rigid and brownish on drying; sepals 1·5-2·25 mm. long and ± 1·25 mm. broad at the base, triangular, acute.
Flowers green-yellow to bright-yellow.
