Woody climber to 12 m.; young stems rough, soon becoming thickened and woody with rough-ridged mauve-grey or brownish bark; older stems up to 100 mm. across, ridged, rough-papillate on ridges, with pale greyish coral-like bark.. Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets sessile, unlobed or palmately ± 3-lobed; middle leaflet 16–38 mm. long, 4–30 mm. broad, ovate or rhombic, cuneate, sinuate-toothed, minutely scabrid-punctate or hispidulous; lateral leaflets similar but ± unequal-based; petiole 9–28 mm. long.. Tendrils simple.. Dioecious.. Male flowers in shortly racemose clusters of 6–50 or more, often borne on leafless stems; pedicels 3–5 mm. long; receptacle-tube 1.5–1.8 mm. long, densely hairy inside at the mouth; lobes triangular, 1 mm. long; petals greenish-yellow, 2–3 mm. long, 1.2–2 mm. broad; stamens 5, shortly inserted..
