Characteristics

Shrub or liane 1.3–20 m. tall; young branches sparsely setose; older branches with fawn-coloured bark.. Leaf-blades drying brownish, elliptic to broadly elliptic, 4–7.5 cm. long, 2.4–4 cm. wide, obtuse to subacuminate and often shortly apiculate at apex or sometimes emarginate, obtuse or rounded at base, subcoriaceous, moderately shiny above, sparsely setose on midrib beneath; lateral nerves in 6 main pairs, impressed above; tertiary nerves moderately finely reticulate, rather obscure; domatia present as tufts of brown or rusty coloured hairs; petioles 4–10 mm. long, densely setose; stipules lanceolate, 4–8 mm. long, setose, caducous.. Flowers 5–6-merous, borne in pedunculate, 1–20-flowered cymes; peduncles 0.5–2.5 cm. long, sparsely setose; pedicels 3–6 mm. long, sparsely setose; bracteoles inconspicuous, lanceolate.. Calyx-tube ellipsoid, 2.5 mm. long, glabrous; calyx-limb well developed, 1.75–2 mm. long, divided almost to base into 5–6 triangular lobes, sparsely setose outside, coarsely reddish setose inside.. Corolla yellowish green (only known from mature bud); tube 7 mm. long, with a ring of deflexed hairs at mid-point, pubescent above and below; lobes narrowly oblong, 4 mm. long, 1.75 mm. wide.. Stigmatic knob ± 2 mm. long.. Disk glabrous.. Fruit compressed conical widest at top, 1.1 cm. long, 1.3 cm. wide, 9 mm. thick, apex not at all indented, tapering to base; pyrene (from single-seeded fruit) ± broadly ellipsoid, 10 mm. long, 8 mm. wide, 7 mm. thick, slightly rugulose; circular area lying perpendicular to ventral face containing a central ridge along line of dehiscence; point of attachment not free.
