Characteristics

Climber or scandent shrub; young branches densely hispid with rusty coloured hairs.. Leaf-blades drying discolorous, brownish above, pale beneath, obovate to broadly elliptic, 4.5–10 cm. long, 2.2–6.5 cm. wide, acute then apiculate at apex, subcordate to cordate at base, hispid on both faces with dense hairs on the nerves beneath; lateral nerves in 7–9 main pairs, often impressed above; tertiary nerves very coarsely reticulate or sometimes obscure; domatia obscure; petiole 2–7 mm. long, densely hispid; stipules ovate, 1.5–2.5 cm. long, 1–1.4 cm. wide, acute, densely pubescent outside.. Flowers 5-merous, borne in pedunculate congested cymes; peduncle 3–7 mm. long, densely pubescent; pedicels very reduced, up to 1 mm. long; bracts conspicuous, ovate, up to 2 cm. long, 1 cm. wide, acuminate, apiculate, densely hispid outside, glabrescent inside; bracteoles similar to bracts but smaller.. Calyx-tube 2.5 mm. long, pubescent; limb divided almost to base into linear lobes, 0.7–1.4 cm. long, densely hispid.. Corolla-tube 4 mm. long, lacking ring of deflexed hairs; lobes ovate, 5 mm. long, acute, pubescent at apex outside.. Anthers fully exserted, with the cells not apparent.. Style 8.5 mm. long; stigmatic knob 2–2.5 mm. long, strongly ribbed.. Disk pubescent.. Fruit not known.
