Characteristics

Leaf blades 8.5–15.5 × 3–7.5 cm, oblong-elliptic to broadly oblong-elliptic, acute or more often gradually acuminate at apex, sometimes apiculate, rounded and sometimes unequal at base, usually subcoriaceous, somewhat shiny on upper surface, glabrous; lateral nerves in 7(8) main pairs; tertiary venation coarsely reticulate, not very conspicuous; domatia present as glabrous or ciliate pits, sometimes conspicuous; petiole 9–15 mm long, glabrous; stipules 5–12 mm long, with a broadly triangular base topped by a linear lobe; leaves subtending lateral branches all fallen in specimens seen.

Flowers with an unpleasant odour, 5-merous, borne in many-flowered pedunculate cymes; peduncles 7–13 mm long, glabrous to sparsely pubescent; pedicels 5–12 mm long, glabrous to sparsely pubescent; bracteoles up to 1.5 mm long.
Pyrene 12–15 × 11 × 10 mm, broadly ellipsoid with ventral face flattened; lid-like area on ventral face well defined, circular with a prominent central crest.
Corolla tube 3.5–4.5 mm long with a ring of deflexed hairs at mid-point inside; lobes 2–3 × 1.25–1.5 mm, oblong, lanceolate to ovate, acute.
A small tree. It grows 3-5 m high. The fruit are 1 cm across. The fruit are edible but astringent.
Calyx tube c. 1 mm long, glabrous to glabrescent; limb 0.5–0.75 mm long, dentate, ciliate.
Fruit 12–15 × 16–18 mm, scarcely laterally compressed, indented at apex, glabrous.
Climber, or semi-climber, with a fluted trunk; young stems glabrous.
Pollen presenter 1–1.75 mm long; disk pubescent.
Anthers fully exserted, erect.
