Characteristics

Climber with young branches glabrous to densely pilose or sometimes tomentose.. Leaf-blades discolorous, drying brown or blackish above and pale beneath, elliptic, oblong-elliptic or sometimes ovate, (5.5–)7.5–13 cm. long, 2.5–5.5 cm. wide, long-acuminate at apex, obtuse to rounded or truncate to subcordate or sometimes cordate at base, glabrous or less often sparsely pubescent above, sparsely pubescent or glabrous save for the nerves beneath, sometimes ciliate; lateral nerves in 5–7 main pairs; tertiary nerves obscure or more often clearly apparent and very coarsely reticulate; domatia present in angles of lateral and tertiary nerves or sometimes absent; petioles 4–12 mm. long, sparsely pilose to setose; stipules triangular-lanceolate, ovate-lanceolate or ovate, 0.7–2 cm. long, 3–13 mm. wide, acuminate, glabrous or velutinous outside; leaves subtending lateral branches not differentiated.. Flowers 5-merous, borne in shortly pedunculate 10–40-flowered cymes; peduncles 3–15 mm. long, rusty pubescent; pedicels 3–8 mm. long, setose to pubescent; bracteoles resembling small stipules, up to 7 mm. long.. Calyx-tube 1–1.5 mm. long, rusty pubescent; limb 1.5–3 mm. long, distinctly wider than tube, truncate or repand or sometimes distinctly dentate, sparsely covered with hairs or glabrous.. Corolla-tube 3.5–4 mm. long, with a ring of deflexed hairs set at mid-point inside, pubescent above; lobes oblong-ovate, 3–3.75 mm. long, 1.5–1.75 mm. wide, acute and thickened at apex.. Anthers fully exserted, eventually reflexing, sometimes with cells apparent, connective covering dorsal face and drying blackish.. Style 0.8–1 cm. long, glabrous; stigmatic knob 1.25–1.5 mm. long.. Disk pubescent.. Fruit square to oblong in outline, 1.8–2.2 cm. long, 1.7–1.8 cm. wide, slightly bilobed, not indented at apex, slightly tapered towards base; pyrene obovoid with ventral face flattened, ±1.5 cm. long, 0.9 cm. wide, 0.8 cm. thick, smooth; circular area perpendicular to point of attachment (rather small in relation to size of pyrene) with a central crest.
