Characteristics

Small tree or scandent shrub; young stems densely covered with soft straw-coloured to rusty hairs, older stems with light-coloured bark.. Leaf-blades turning a pinkish brown or greyish when dry, elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 4–10 cm. long, 2–5.5 cm. wide, acute to obtuse, subacuminate or sometimes emarginate, then shortly mucronate at apex, rounded or sometimes obtuse at base, glabrous save for the pubescent midrib above, glabrescent to sparsely pubescent with densely pubescent or occasionally pubescent nerves beneath; lateral nerves in 5–6 main pairs; tertiary nerves coarsely reticulate and rather obscure; domatia absent; petiole 4–8 mm. long, pubescent; stipules with a triangular base produced into a subulate lobe, 3–5 mm. long altogether, pubescent outside; leaves subtending lateral branches smaller but scarcely differing in shape.. Flowers 5-merous, borne in 30–50-flowered branched pedunculate cymes; peduncles 1–1.5 cm. long, pubescent; pedicels 2–4 mm. long, densely pubescent; bracteoles up to 2 mm. long.. Calyx-tube 1 mm. long, pubescent to densely pubescent; limb 1 mm. long, dentate to mid-point, puberulous, densely ciliate.. Corolla white; tube 3–3.5 mm. long, with deflexed hairs set at mid-point inside; lobes oblong-lanceolate, 2.5–3 mm. long, 1.25–1.5 mm. wide, acute.. Anthers fully exserted but not reflexed.. Style 8 mm. long, glabrous; stigmatic knob 1 mm. long.. Disk pubescent.. Fruit edible, oblong-cordate in outline, 1.1–1.2 cm. long; 1.5–1.6 cm. wide; pyrene ellipsoid with ventral face flattened, 1.2 cm. long, 0.7 cm. wide, rugulose; area above point of attachment circular with a central crest separating a depression on either side.
