Characteristics

Climber to 9 m. tall (? or tree); young branches glabrous or sometimes sparsely pubescent.. Leaf-blades elliptic to broadly elliptic, 5.5–11 cm. long, 2.5–5 cm. wide, long-acuminate or sometimes acuminate at apex, acute to rounded and sometimes unequal at base, entirely glabrous; lateral nerves in 5–6 main pairs; tertiary nerves finely reticulate, apparent on lower surface only; domatia present as small glabrous or ciliate pits; petiole 5–10 mm. long, glabrous to pubescent; stipules broadly triangular at base, subulate above, 5–8 mm. long, glabrous; leaves subtending lateral branches similar in shape but smaller.. Flowers 4–5-merous, borne in pedunculate 10–50-flowered cymes; peduncles 0.5–1.7 cm. long, sparsely pubescent to pubescent; pedicels 3–7 mm. long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent towards base; bracteoles inconspicuous.. Calyx-tube 1 mm. long, glabrous; limb 0.25–0.5 mm. long, repand.. Corolla white; tube 2.5–3 mm. long, with a ring of deflexed hairs a short distance below the top inside; lobes oblong-lanceolate, 2 mm. long, 1.25–1.5 mm. wide.. Anthers fully exserted but not reflexing.. Style 5.75–6 mm. long; stigmatic knob 1.1 mm. long.. Disk pubescent.. Fruit only known from 1-seeded examples, ± 1 cm. long, 0.8 cm. wide; pyrene ellipsoid, 1 cm. long, 7 mm. wide, rounded at base; lid-like area rather small, scarcely inclining from adaxial face with prominent crest continuing around apex.. Seeds with outer 2/3 of endosperm densely and evenly grained with tannins.
