Genus

Angiosperms > Sapindales > Meliaceae

Characteristics

Large trees. Leaves paripinnate. Flowers 4-or 5-merous, unisexual (plants monoecious) in large much-branched panicles. Calyx lobed almost to the base, the lobes suborbicular, imbricate. Petals 4 or 5, free, contorted, erect in open flowers, somewhat hooded. Staminal tube urceolate, bearing 8–10 included anthers or antherodes towards the apex and terminated by 8–10 suborbicular, emarginate or irregularly lobed, overlapping appendages alternating with the anthers or antherodes. Disk in ♂ flowers cushion-shaped, fused to the base of the pistillode but free from the base of the staminal tube, less conspicuous in ♀ flowers. Ovary 4–5-locular, each locule with 12–18 ovules; style-head discoid with crenulate margin, upper surface with 4–5 radiating stigmatic ridges. Fruit an erect, subglobose, woody septifragal capsule opening by 4–5(–6) valves from the apex, the valves remaining joined at the base and often with rough, fibrous marginal strands; columella not extending to the apex of the capsule, with 4–5(–6) sharp, hard, woody ridges; seed-scars white, conspicuous. Seeds 8–18 per locule, broadly transversely ellipsoid or suborbicular, narrowly winged all round the margin.
More
Trees, monoecious. Leaves in spirals, even-pinnate; leaflet blades glabrous, margin entire. Thyrses axillary or subterminal. Flowers appearing bisexual. Calyx 4-or 5-parted almost to base, imbricate. Petals 4 or 5, distinct, contorted, much longer than calyx when in bud. Staminal tube urceolate, kettlelike, or cup-shaped; anthers 8-10, inserted on inside apical part of tube. Disk cushion-shaped. Ovary 4-or 5-locular, with 12-16(-18) amphitropous ovules per locule; stigma disciform, with 4 grooves on apex. Capsule globose or suborbicular, woody, apically 4-or 5-valvate when mature. Seeds with vestigial endosperm; cotyledons flat, collateral; radicle lateral.
Ovary 4–5-locular, each loculus with 12–16 or more pendulous ovules in 2 rows; style short; style-head discoid, almost completely blocking entrance to staminal tube; margin crenellate, upper surface with minute central papilla with 4–5 radiating, (?) stigmatic ridges.
Staminal tube urceolate, glabrous inside and out, bearing 8 or 10 included anthers or antherodes inside towards the apex and terminated by 8 or 10 subcircular, emarginate or irregularly lobed appendages alternating with the anthers or antherodes.
Fruit an upright, almost spherical woody septifragal capsule, opening by 4–5 valves from the apex; columella not extending to apex of capsule, with 4–5 sharp ridges, hard and woody; seed scars white, conspicuous.
Flowers monoecious, but with well-developed vestiges of opposite sex, and with little external difference between the sexes, borne in large much-branched panicles.
Seeds 6 or more per loculus, broadly transversely ellipsoid, narrowly winged more or less all round margin.
Pistillode similar to ovary but much narrower; loculi well-developed, but vestigial ovules minute.
Disk cushion-shaped, fused to the base of the ovary but free from the staminal tube.
Petals 4–5, free, much longer than the calyx in bud, contorted.
Calyx lobed almost to base, lobes 4–5, subcircular, imbricate.
Leaves paripinnate; leaflets entire.
Trees, usually of large size.
Pending.
