Perennial herb. Stem usually single, short. Leaves grass-like, first erect, later recurved at ± middle, 0.35-0.60 m long, 3-4 mm wide, V-shaped in cross section, margins scaberulous to finely denticulate, often smooth towards base. Inflorescence overtopping recurved leaves, 0.3-0.6 m high, with subglobose to oblong, dense raceme. Flowers greenish white to reddish and spreading in bud, typically creamy yellow (sometimes yellow, coral or orange in hybrids) and spreading to pendulous when mature, 15-20 mm long.
