Characteristics

Perennial herb from a thick rhizome, 4 cm long, up to 3 cm in diameter, with spreading fleshy yellowish roots 4–5 mm in diameter.. Leaves in a basal rosette, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 25–85 cm long, up to 3 cm wide towards the base.. Inflorescence 1–1.2 m high; peduncle 10–16 mm in diameter; raceme very dense, 10–20 cm long, 7–9 cm wide; fertile bracts oblong to lanceolate, 8–10 mm long, 1–2 mm wide at the base, blunt to obtuse at the apex; pedicels 4–8 mm long.. Flowers pink to orange-pink or red, with yellow tips, the upper held ± horizontally, the lower strongly pendent, slightly decurved; the perianth-tube 32–42 mm long, 2–3 mm wide around the ovary, only slightly constricted above the ovary, 2–3 mm wide, 4–6 mm wide at the mouth, the lobes 1–2 mm long; stamens level with the tube or slightly exserted; style exserted, up to 10 mm in older flowers.. Immature capsules ovoid, ± 5 mm long, 4 mm wide.
