Perennial herb; caulescent. Stem usually single, short. Leaves first erect, later recurved, soft, 250-500 x 2-5 mm wide, keeled; margins and keel smooth to finely serrulate, especially toward apex. Flowers: inflorescence overtopping leaves, 0.3-0.5 m high, with subglobose to ovoid, dense racemes; perianth 20-35 mm long, dull red to reddish brown, often white-tipped and spreading to pendulous in bud, white or tinged with reddish brown towards base and pendulous when mature; Nov.-Mar.
