Corolla lobes above scarlet, red or light violet, paler beneath, tube outside and back of lobes ± densely papillose to ± glabrous; tube altogether (3.1)4.3–5.5(9.4) mm. long, the widened part (1.3)2–2.4(2.6) x (0.4)0.7–1.5(1.65) mm., the narrow part (0.2)0.4–0.75(0.9) mm. wide; lobes (1.5)1.7–3.9(4) x (0.6)1–2.5(2.7) mm., triangular-elliptic, not parted to the base, acute.
Leaves 10–45 x (0.9)1.2–2(2.2) mm., linear to filiform, apex acute to apiculate, slightly narrowed to the base, ± glabrous with lower midrib papillose; stipular sheath (0.6)0.9–2(2.7) mm. long, ± sparsely papillose, the lobes (0.5)0.6–1.8(2.6) mm. long.
Calyx tube (0.9)1.2–2.8(2.9) x (0.7)1.1–2.7(3) mm., ellipsoid, verruculose to ± densely papillose, rarely ± glabrous; calyx lobes (0.9)1.3–2(2.3) mm. long and (0.3) 0.4–0.6(0.8) mm. wide at the base, narrowly triangular, margins scabrid.
Inflorescences lax, extensive, 2 distinctly pedicellate flowers at a node; peduncles c. 10–60 mm. long; pedicels slender (4.6)8.4–16.6(30) mm. long, lengthening after anthesis, glabrous to slightly scabrid.
Annual, slender laxly branched herbs 20–70 cm. tall; stems ± glabrous to roughly papillose.
Style and stigma as long as the narrow part of the tube; stigma lobes c. 1–1.8 mm. long.
Capsules (2.7)2.8–3.6(3.8) x (2.9)3.1–3.8(4.1) mm., subglobose, ± glabrous.
Anthers c. 1–1.5 mm. long, narrowly ovoid; pollen 4(5)-colporate.
Seeds brownish, c. 0.4 mm. long, angular-subconic.
Erect slender-branched herb 1-2 ft. high
Flowers dull red or whitish.
