Annual herb, 0.11-0.60 m high. Leaves with blade narrowly linear-ovate to narrowly ovate-elliptic; stipular sheaths in the midstem region mostly produced into 1 or 2, ± fimbriated, triangular lobes. Flowers: in subsessile or sessile pairs at nodes; stigma comprised of 2, free, ± filiform lobes, held just below or touching the anthers; calyx with tube densely beset with long papillae or hirsute, lobes ± 1/4 the length of the narrow part; corolla with tube 3-6 mm long, dilated part 1/4-1/3 the length of narrow part; narrow part glabrous, dilated part and back of lobes scabrid, lobes white, off-white, grey, yellowish green, bluish white or brownish, tube darker; Nov.-Apr.
